April 2009

Dear Friends,

Thank you for your support of melanoma research in Nick’s memory.  Nick was a very special young man who taught us so much about how to live life to the fullest and care about what matters most – your loved ones!

Nick handled his diagnosis with courage and optimism. He convinced everyone around him that he was going to beat melanoma and become a survivor so that he could bring awareness of this disease to as many people as possible.  He spoke of his cancer as just one small obstacle in continuing the life he loved so much. His positive attitude continued until the end when he asked me to PROMISE to do what he could no longer do.  Together, we can make a difference and fulfill this very special promise I made to him.

With much gratitude, we dedicate the following accomplishments to the Friends and Family of Nicholas Dusenberry

  • The 2008 golf tournament raised over $17,000!
  • The total in Nick’s endowment fund is now almost $55,000.
  • A plaque was placed on the Recognition Wall in Roswell Park Cancer Institute’s lobby which reads Friends and Family of Nicholas Dusenberry.
  • We were also honored as a Partner in Progress for our contribution to dermatologic cancer research. That plaque also lists Friends and Family of Nicholas Dusenberry and is located in the Dermatologic Clinic Waiting Room.

Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer and effects more and more of our loved ones everyday.  This year more than one million Americans will be diagnosed with some form of skin cancer.  It is the fastest growing cancer and affects more people than prostate, breast, colorectal, and cervical cancers combined.  One person dies every hour from skin cancer and more than 75% of these deaths are from melanoma.  The good news is most skin cancer is preventable and, if detected early, has a 95% cure rate.

Our sincerest thanks to all of you who help carry on Nick’s cause and bring awareness to as many people as possible. Please join us on Friday, August 14th at the Links at Ivy Ridge – I know Nick will make it another amazing day!
